201302-06 The National Sun Yat-sen University Welcomes Visiting International Scholar, Dr. Maeda Hiroko
The National Sun Yat-sen University's (NSYSU) Center for Japanese Studies is proud to welcome visiting scholar, Dr. Maeda Hiroko, during the spring, 2013 semester. By attaining the spring semester, 2013 Japan Interchange Assoication's grant, the Center for Japanese studies was able to attain the services of Japan's PHP INTERFACE(PHP研究所) chief researcher, Dr. Maeda Hiroko, from mid-February to mid-June, 2013, as a visiting international scholar. During her stint at NSYSU, Dr. Maeda hopes to be able to participate in lectures and conferences at universities throughout Taiwan and interact with Taiwanese scholars and students.
Therefore, the Center for Japanese Studies has arranged for Dr. Maeda to participate in at least two academic proceedings, beginning in March, 2013:
(1) On March 22, Dr. Maeda will be in Tainan with the Center for Japanese Studies' Dr. Kuo Yujen participating in “Meeting for Doctoral Students Conducting Japanese Research.” During this exchange, students will be able to understand many different subjects from Dr. Maeda's perspective and better appreciate Japan's current situation. Students will benefit greatly from this experience.
(2) On March 25, Dr. Maeda will be at Tainan's National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) giving a seminar titled “The Challenges for Japanese Security .” NCKU Institute of Political Science Director, Dr. Yang Yung-Nien, and Professor Hung Jing-Fu, and NSYSU Center for Japanese Studies Dr. Kuo Yujen arranged the seminar, which is an excellent opportunity for NCKU and NSYSU to jointly coordinate such an event.
April: Dr. Maeda Visits the National University of Kaohsiung to Give a Lecture
On April 10, Dr. Maeda lectured at the National Cheng Chi University (NCCU); the lecture focused on Japanese security. The event was arranged and hosted by NCCU's Dr. Zheng-Jia Tsai. Dr. Maeda lectured in Japanese and provided students attending the event a new perspective on Japanese security.
On April 26, 2013, Dr. Maeda visited the National University of Kaohsiung to give a lecture on Japan's security policy. Dr. Jack Yang (楊鈞池), Assistant Professor in the National University of Kaohsiung's Department of Government and Law, and Dr. Yujen Kuo, Assistant Professor at the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) in the Institute of China and Asia-Pacific Studies (ICAPS) and Research Fellow in NSYSU's Center for Japanese Studies (CJS), arranged for Dr. Maeda's lecture.
Dr. Maeda used both Mandarin Chinese and English to give her presentation to students in the National University of Kaohsiung's Department of Government and Law. The students also questioned Dr. Maeda on U.S. policies toward the Asia-Pacific, particularly regarding America's “return” and “rebalance” to Asia and how such activities would affect Japan's national security policy and strategy. The students gained much from Dr. Maeda's lecture.
May:Dr. Maeda Hiroko attended two scholarly activities
(1)On May 29, Dr. Maeda attended the a lecture pertaining to Japan's security policy at Taipei's National Chung Hsing University (NCHU). Dr. Tsai Teng-Chieh, Professor at NCHU, and The National Sun Yat-sen University's (NSYSU) Dr. Yujen Kuo arranged the program. Dr. Maeda lectured in English and in Mandarin and discussed a broad range of issues regarding Japan's security policy with students.
(2)May 31 saw Dr. Maeda travel to Tainan to attend Dr. Yujen Kuo's monthly Japanese Researchers' Symposium.“Meeting for Doctoral Students Conducting Japanese Research.”The May 31st symposium was held at The National Cheng Kung University's (NCKU) Lee Hsing Campus's Magic School of Green Technologies. Dr. Maeda and Dr. Kuo gave Doctoral students tips and suggestions regarding their articles and dissertations and offered advice on making revisions to their work. From Dr. Maeda's input the students were better able to understand Japan's situation from the perspective of a Japanese scholar in order to enrich their work.
