 Abe-ministration: Reforms and Challenges” International Conference(2013-11-02)

Undoubtedly, Abe Shinzo has been a major focal point in Japanese and East Asian politics recently. As President of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and, as of December 2012, Japanese Prime Minister, Abe was able to reestablish LDP control over the Japanese government after over three years of rule by the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ).

 International Seminars - 「Japan at Turning Point: Challenges and Opportunities for Post-311 Japan Researchers」(2012-11-17,18)

The National Sun Yat-sen University’s (NSYSU) Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) hosted the International Seminar, “Japan at Turning Point: Challenges and Opportunities for Post-311 Japan Researchers” on November 17-18, 2012. The seminar was conducted in NSYSU’s College of Social Sciences Conference Room. This marked the third time the CJS hosted a seminar. Scholars from the United States, Japan, Korea, and China presented at the seminar and discussed the future of Japanese research.

 International Seminars - 「Transition of Taiwan-Japan Relations within Post-War Era(2012-09-28)

2012 marks the 40th year since Taiwan and Japan ended formal diplomatic relations.This international seminar—“Transition of Taiwan-Japan Relations within the Post-War Era”—was hosted jointly by The National Sun Yat-sen University’s (NSYSU) Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) and the Takushoku University of Japan. It is hoped that this international seminar will deepen postwar Taiwan-Japan relations and help such developments continue in the future.

 
The National Sun Yat-sen University’s (NSYSU) Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute’s Industrial Economics & Knowledge Center (IEK) jointly held the international seminar “Aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami and Alternative National Security on November 11, 2011. 

● Taiwan- Japan International Seminars -「Death and Life Study in East Asia」(2011-09-21)

This international seminar, “Death and Life Study in East Asia,” intends to deepen the understanding of the differences between Western and Eastern thinking on Life and Death Study. It offers a new perspective and understanding of the demographic issues facing both Taiwan and Japan.

● International Seminars -「 50th anniversary of Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan and Security Issues in East Asia」(2010-12-11)

The National Sun Yat-sen University’s (NSYSU) Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) and the Taiwan Association of Northeast Asian Studies jointly held the international seminar “50th anniversary of Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan and Security Issues in East Asia” on December 11, 2010.

 Kwansei Gakuin University (Japan) Professor Morita Masaya

Kwansei Gakuin University (Japan) Professor Morita Masaya will be present at the College of Social Sciences on Friday, November 1st to hold “Introduction to Japanese Culture and Society,” an exchange meeting.NSYSU’s Center for Japanese Studies is dedicated to providing a vehicle for social sciences, language, and scholarly and cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Japan.

 The President of National Sun Yat-sen University Visits Japan

On August 5, 2013, The President of National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), Hung-Duen Yang, participated in a conference held at Tokyo University and was able to use this opportunity to visit Senshu Univervisty; Japan’s Institute for Future Engineering (IFENG); and Keio University’s (of Japan) Kamo Tomoki, Associate Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in order to expand NSYSU’s and NSYSU’s Center for Japanese Studies’ (CJS) opportunities for collaboration, cooperation, and exchange. 

 The Dean of the College of Social Sciences Visits Japan

The Dean of the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) College of Social Sciences and the Director of NSYSU’s Center for Japanese Studies (CJS), Dr. Lin Wen-cheng, accepted Senshu University’s (Japan) July, 2013 invitation to visit Japan.During their short four-day trip, the group visited Senshu University (attending a conference there), the Panasonic Corporation’s PHP Institute, the Tokyo Foundation, and the Japan Institute of International Affairs.

 International Visiting Scholars

The National Sun Yat-sen University’s (NSYSU) Center for Japanese Studies is proud to welcome visiting scholar, Dr. Maeda Hiroko, during the spring, 2013 semester. By attaining the spring semester 2013 Japan Interchange Assoication’s grant, the Center for Japanese studies was able to attain the services of Japan’s PHP INTERFACE (PHP Director) chief researcher, Dr. Maeda Hiroko, from mid-February to mid-June, 2013, as a visiting international scholar. 

 The President of National Sun Yat-sen University Visits Japan

In order to promote Taiwan-Japan academic exchanges and better relations between the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) and Japanese academic and business communities, the Interchange of Japan arranged for NSYSU President Yang Hung-Duen to go to Japan from January 22 to 26, 2013 for an official visit.

The National Sun Yat-sen University’s (NSYSU) Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) was proud to have the opportunity to host so many Japan experts in 2012. Of these, the lectures of the National Cheng Chi University’s (NCCU) Master Program in Japanese Studies Director, Dr. Zheng-Jia Tsai, Fujen Catholic University Japanese Department’s Dr. Szu-Shen Ho, and The Institute for Political Studies in Japan’s Dr. Rei Shiratori especially reinforced NSYSU students’ understanding of issues related to the study of Japan. 

● Symposium with Industrial Economics and Knowledge Research Center (IEK), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)

Due to the Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) Research Fellow and Assistant Professor Dr. Yujen Kuo’s expertise in technology and technological production, CJS was delighted in 2011 to receive the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Research Center’s (IEK) scholarly exchange representatives. 

「Comprehending Japan」Talk Series

Since the National Sun Yat-sen University’s (NSYSU) Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) was established, CJS has worked tirelessly to enhance all facets of student and teacher understanding of Japan. In 2010, Sun Yat-sen Research Center for Social Sciences, NSYSU, began hosting a special talk series entitled “Comprehending Japan.” 

● Scholar Visits

Waseda University’s Dr. Ikeo Aiko and Dr. Amako Satoshi guided a discussion on the effects of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) on Sino-U.S.-Japan-Taiwan relations. The purpose of the talk was to encourage the exchange of opinions and ideas between the scholars and the attending students. The discussions were penetrating and provoked great interest from the participants and attendees.
